It was a mixed bag season for the Waitara Bears which culminated, on Saturday 30 July, in a last chance opportunity, preliminary final, to make the Taranaki Rugby League final, in atrocious weather conditions at Clifton Park Waitara.

Bell Block Marist Dragons justifiably won the game (34- 4) with more consistent phases and less errors in the trying conditions, they clocked up 22 points in the second half. Brave supporters turned out huddling behind umbrellas and wrapped up in wet weather gear to cheer on their respective teams.

With a relatively young side and coaching staff the Bears did really well getting to the preliminary finals and finishing the season at the top of the table. With a solid off season training regime; next year could be their season, especially given the form of the under 17 Waitara Bears (Cubs?) who won their final a few weeks earlier. With all this young talent coming on the future looks bright. Go the Bears!
